wow!

hallway – green plant on table. picture of garden (or something similar) with white mat & black frame or mirror with silver frame

guest room – use royal as an accent. throw pillows, vases, a picture incorporating all the colors, or several plates in a blue and white patteren hung on a wall. a couple of books with bue spines stacked on a night table with a white lamp on top.

living room – a couple of plants, some books, again a painting/picture incorporating all the colors found in the room. reddish-orange would be a great accent color in small doses…a vase of yellow flowers, a couple of small throw pillows (the same red as in the kitchen would help to unify the rooms)

dining room – a little yellow would put some zip intot he room and you could use it in the kitchen as well. small items again.

den – white shells, pictures painting of the ocean, a touch of yellow adds sunshine.

it seems that none of the rooms have any unifying color…so the yellow could work as such. you could also use blue or white. the yellow adds puch and is often an overlooked color. the particular shades you use would be what makes the difference.

hope this helps.

Who will win the HGTV Green Home Giveaway? I think I will feel sorry for that person/s.?

Question by niksag_3000: Who will win the HGTV Green Home Giveaway? I think I will feel sorry for that person/s.?
THe Green House Giveaway is like a dream come true for most people, but in such hard times and so many people are looking for jobs. What do you think will happen to this winning couple?

Its going to be great at the beginning, but later on there are some things to worry about – paying the taxes and maintaining it. And to top it off, its going to be really hard to sell this house if they decide they can’t keep it. I only hope the winning couple can afford to live in such a wonderful home and not face bankruptcy at the end because they are trying to sell one home and maintain the other.

Good Luck to the winner!

People make fun of Port St. Lucie (where the house is) all the time, I’ve never been there. What’s up with that?

The most important thing is don’t put it in direct afternoon sun unless you want to create an oven. It would be best if you could put it in a location with morning sun. Most plants will do well with 4 to 6 hours of sunlight. You have other things to consider, are you only trying to start seedlings? Are you growing flowers, vegetables? What area of the country are you in. You could get help by doing a search for a Master Gardener. All you need to do is type in your state and Master Gardener to find one. They can tell you what will do well in your area of the country.
Even if you live in a cooler climate, you can grow some really nice flowering plants in a little greenhouse. In the afternoon you should open the door for ventilation if it is one of the really small ones with no windows.
Good luck!

Wow – I’m envious, I gotta admit. I would suggest you get in touch with a nursery supply company to get the supplies you’ll need. Presumably that would include everything – benches, containers, soil, hoses, fertilizers – the works. Check online for suppliers near you – and enjoy!!

We have a small greenhouse business just going into our second year. We’ve found that the most important thing you can have is patience. That aside, you’ll need a way to heat and a way to cool. If you aren’t heating it up your cooling it off. Secondly, available water, critical. Fertilizer, liquid based, learn what needs it and what doesn’t. Watch out for mold or damp off. Don’t water on cloudy days, big mistake made by newbies. Keep a thermometer inside and outside. Don’t be afraid to discourage rodents. If you get soil gnats check with your local professionals on methods to erradicate. Most of all, have fun!!!!!! Enjoy!

Lots of good answers so far. Here’s my list:

Eat Vegan and compost everything you don’t eat.
Save your “cold run” water from the shower for plants.
Wear a sweater before turning on/up the heat.
Replace incandescent bulbs with flourescent or LED, but wait until you need to; no reason to spend the money now, but when you need to buy a replacement bulb, buy the best most efficient bulb you can.
Grow plants.
Unplug “smart” appliances if you’re not using them. All those little clock displays take a dribble of electricity; like a leaking tap.
Fix all your leaking plumbing.
Insulate: try to avoid using heating or cooling.
Shop for products with less packaging.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. (Repeat)
Tell your freinds to do the same.

Thank you for asking.
